Anything bad on a map of the US and it’s always those states at the bottom that are the worst.
Teen pregnancy, education, sex education, laws sometimes, it’s always them…
The post-Civil War period of US history unfortunately did not bring about the overall reconstruction of the south that we’d hoped for. The largely agrarian economy was decimated during the war and by the bitterness and vindication of the north. Reform was resisted in the South so eventually it was largely left to languish while the north progressed. Conservatism and racism and poverty was rampant and unchecked for a long time. These statistics are wonky, of course, just like test scores. Testing and schooling varies from state to state, but the South(which is the middle-to-eastern southern area of red) still struggles.
A sociologist would do better at reviewing this than I, but I think that’s some of the general idea.
